The Role: The office of Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is seeking a Legislative Director in Washington, DC to oversee a broad policy agenda and committee work. 

Essential Job Function: The Legislative Director, in coordination with the Congresswoman and the Chief of Staff, will develop and execute the legislative agenda for the office. The individual will serve as an advisor to the Congresswoman, disseminate  legislative information and floor activity to the entire team, and manage and develop the legislative team. This is a senior, managerial role within the office.

Legislative Director Roles and Responsibilities, include, but are not limited to: 

  • Collaborating with internal and external partners to develop strategies to advance and implement policy priorities of the office;
  • In collaboration with the Chief of Staff, training and developing each member of the legislative team;
  • Reviewing all legislative documents, including memos and remarks for committee hearings and markups, and floor debate, among other legislative deliverables;
  • Developing and advancing legislation and amendments relevant to the Congresswoman’s policy priorities;
  • Implementing the Congresswoman’s strategic goals for the Committee on Energy & Commerce, as well as her subcommittees on Health, Energy, and Oversight;
  • In partnership with the communications team, developing and editing remarks and talking points for internal and external consumption;
  • Monitoring all floor activity, including providing vote recommendations;
  • Tracking and responding to major legislative activity in the House and Senate, as well as policies and rulings implemented by the Executive and Judiciary branches;
  • Providing on-call rapid response to major legislative and policy-related events related to both domestic and foreign policy;
  • Responding promptly to incoming legislative inquiries and requests;
  • Establishing and managing relationships with leadership, committees, the New York delegation, relevant caucuses, and other Legislative Directors;
  • Meeting and maintaining strong ties with constituent groups, grassroots organizers, frontline communities, academics, and other stakeholders; 

This is not an entry or junior-level position and requires an individual to have extensive House and/or Senate experience.   

Skills: 

You have a proven track record of working within existing infrastructure and processes in service of power building for our constituents while focusing on coalition building. 

You are collaborative and eager to work in a fast-paced environment, in which you are challenged to lean into visionary and intersectional thinking, looking to transform our society and economy. 

You have established skill sets that allow you to be a strategic thinker who is capable of managing a large volume of incoming while achieving office priorities.

You work well under pressure; possess strong oral and written communication skills; and are capable of communicating with a range of stakeholders and other offices.

Individuals with at least 7+ years of legislative or committee experience, extensive knowledge of legislative processes, and/or legal experience are encouraged to apply.

Location and Work Environment: The role is based in New York’s 14th Congressional DC office: 250 Cannon HOB, Washington, DC 20515. 

Compensation: $120,000 annually, depending on level of experience and expertise. Our office provides a competitive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental, federal student loan payment (terms apply), up to 25 days of annual leave, 10 days of paid bereavement leave, and 16 weeks of paid, job-protected family leave.
