Do you make less than $64,000 a year, or are you over 60? The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation for qualifying constituents. Find help near you.
Do you make less than $73,000 a year?Check out IRS Free File, which lets qualified taxpayers prepare and file federal income tax returns online using guided tax preparation software. It’s safe, easy, and free.
New Yorkers who earned $97,000 or less and file as an individual or married couple with qualifying children and/or dependents, or those who earned $68,000 or less and file as an individual or married couple without qualifying children and/or dependents, are eligible to file through NYC Free Tax Prep. Veterans can file their taxes for free usingMilTax e-filing. This new software is available to service members, eligible family members, and survivors. Check to see if you’re eligible.

Do you need the assistance of the Taxpayer Advocate? The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that uses the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights as a guide to deliver assistance to any taxpayer.
What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and how do I know if I need one? ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for people not eligible for a Social Security Number. For example, if you are undocumented, you likely need an ITIN. ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status. The ITIN does not authorize work in the U.S., provide eligibility for Social Security Benefits, or qualify a dependent for Earned Income Tax Credit Purposes.
