Map of Clean Energy Projects in NY-14

Several projects are coming to the district that will reduce pollution, bring good union jobs, and make clean energy cheaper and more available.

Co-op City Power Plant: Investments from the recent infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act can help convert Co-Op City’s gas powered plant to renewable in the coming years.

NineDot Battery Storage: NineDot is a renewable energy company that created a battery storage site in The Bronx. The site stores renewable energy, like wind and solar, and allows it to be used by the community.

Astoria Gateway for Renewable Energy: A peaker plant in Astoria will be turned into a converter station named the Astoria Gateway for Renewable Energy (AGRE). The AGRE station will receive 1,230 megawatts of renewable energy — enough to power 1 million homes — generated by the Beacon Wind offshore wind project, located 60 miles off the eastern tip of Long Island.

Reliable Clean City Queens Transmission Line: Con Edison has finished building a six-mile-long transmission line in Queens that will carry increasingly renewable electricity, enabling the retirement of inefficient, polluting power plants. The completion of the line connecting a substation in Corona with one in Long Island City is a significant milestone in the region’s transition to clean energy.

HydroQuebec: The Champlain Hudson Power Express is a project by HydroQuebec and Transmission Developers to bring hydro energy from Canada to New York City. HydroQuebec will locate a convertor station in Astoria, Queens, as part of this this project. The convertor station is expected to create 1,400 jobs.

Electric Charging Station in Hunts Point: A local community group, The Point CDC, is working to create the Electric Truckers Cooperative (ETC), which would be a refrigerated battery-electric trucking fleet.

Capping The Cross Bronx: Community and environmental justice groups are pushing to place a cover over The Cross Bronx Expressway, in order to reduce pollution and increase green space. The City recently received a federal grant to study the feasibility of the project.
