The mood in U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s virtual town hall was somber as the weight of the country’s ceaseless mass shooting epidemic weighed heavy on the minds of both the two-term congressmember and her Bronx and Queens constituents. Parkchester native Lisa Hamilton, who watched the Thursday evening town hall with her six-year-old daughter, told the Bronx Times they felt compelled to, largely, because they said Ocasio-Cortez wants to fix this country’s issue with gun violence.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held her monthly town hall at P.S. 70 in Astoria on Wednesday night to speak about progress made with the Green New Deal ahead of Earth Day this weekend.

The congresswoman opened the meeting with data showing that greenhouse gas emissions are set to rise, which will inevitably lead to half the world’s landmass becoming inhabitable.

“What we have to do right now, and our responsibility is to dramatically alter the way our economy is dependent on fossil fuels,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

From her office in the Bronx, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” for an exclusive interview that aired Thursday on the situation at the city’s troubled jail complex, Rikers Island.

“This is simply not a place that is structurally safe, whether it’s the CO’s, whether it’s the people that are being kept there,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who toured the facility in October 2021. “No human being is safe on Rikers Island, and it should be closed.”

Progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview that corporate "price gouging" has fueled inflation, placing the blame largely on dominant companies that hike prices and rake in profits without fear of competition.

She strongly rejected claims that government stimulus in response to COVID-19 has caused the price spike, warning that such a diagnosis of the problem could lead to spending cuts with dire consequences for millions of people dependent on federal support.
