The Role: The Office of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is hiring a D.C. based Legislative Assistant to cover energy and environment issues, as well as other issues as assigned, to join its progressive and dedicated legislative team. We welcome you to apply.

Essential Job Function: As a member of our legislative team, the Legislative Assistant will help shape the Congresswoman's energy and environment policy through organizing and engaging our internal and external partners as well as  managing the Congresswoman’s energy and environment portfolio on the Energy & Commerce Committee including liaising with committee staff and crafting memos, talking points, and question lines for hearings. This is not an entry-level position and previous policy and/or Capitol Hill experience is required. 

The Legislative Assistant Role And Responsibilities, include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing all memos, talking points, remarks, and question lines for relevant committee hearings in the Energy & Commerce Committee;
  • Developing legislative strategy pertaining to energy and environment priorities;
  • Managing all intake calls with relevant stakeholders in the district and nationally pertaining to energy and environment policy;
  • Monitoring legislative activity (committee, floor, and Senate) and providing vote recommendations to the Legislative Director and Congresswoman on assigned issue areas;
  • Maintaining strong ties with other energy and environment staffers, committee staff, constituent groups, unions, organizers, academics, and other stakeholders;
  • Staffing the congresswoman for committee meetings and relevant events;
  • Traveling to NY-14 and elsewhere for relevant meetings and events;
  • In partnership with the Communications team, developing and editing remarks and talking points for internal and external consumption ; and
  • Supporting the District team with incoming legislative inquiries and requests.

You: 

  • Have 4+ years professional experience on Capitol Hill or in policy/government.
  • Are fluent in federal energy and environment policy areas.
  • Are a good writer, able to summarize highly-technical policy areas via a one-page memo or 5-minute briefing.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced team environment in which priorities are often shifting and triage and delegation is necessary.
  • Are a self-starter with a track record of managing projects from beginning to end.
  • Have experience facilitating calls and leading meetings.
  • Have experience coalition-building, organizing, and winning.
  • Are politically aligned with the goals of the office.

Location and Work Environment: The role is in-person, based in Washington, D.C. 

Compensation: $75,000. Our office also provides a competitive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental, federal student loan payment (terms apply), up to 25 days of annual leave, 10 days of paid bereavement leave, and 16 weeks of paid, job-protected family leave.
