Advocates working to deconstruct police brutality and anti-Black racism have long called to defund the police, and in the wake of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee and many other Black people by police, the concept has become a rallying cry among protestors. Activists and community organizations define defunding the police as moving public funds away from policing and incarceration, and investing instead in community resources.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has brokered a deal with a key block of Democrats that threatened to derail passage of her sweeping bill overhauling drug prices.

Pelosi met late Tuesday with Reps. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and Mark Pocan, D-Wis., co-leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The caucus said the legislation didn’t go far enough and was threatening to oppose it on the House floor when it is voted on later this week.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York on Thursday confronted a drug company CEO about the high cost of an HIV-prevention drug.

Speaking to Gilead CEO Daniel O'Day, Ocasio-Cortez asked why the drug Truvada for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), which can help reduce the risk of contracting HIV via sex, cost nearly $2,000 per month in the US, versus $8 in Australia. 

O'Day said that the current monthly list price ($1,780) is a product of the drug's "patent protection" in the US, while a generic version of the drug is sold in other countries.
