The Congresswoman’s first piece of legislation was the Green New Deal. Like President Roosevelt’s New Deal, the Green New Deal would create millions of jobs preparing our country for the impacts of climate change and transitioning our national energy grid to renewable sources. Thanks in part to her advocacy, last year, the federal government made its biggest ever investment in climate change - $369 billion to fight climate change, 9 million green jobs and net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

In its recent decision in West Virginia v. EPA, the Supreme Court ruled that without explicit congressional authorization, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot compel power plants to stop using coal.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held her monthly town hall at P.S. 70 in Astoria on Wednesday night to speak about progress made with the Green New Deal ahead of Earth Day this weekend.
The congresswoman opened the meeting with data showing that greenhouse gas emissions are set to rise, which will inevitably lead to half the world’s landmass becoming inhabitable.
“What we have to do right now, and our responsibility is to dramatically alter the way our economy is dependent on fossil fuels,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
